ABOUT THE PROJECT

Wakyuta is a project that aims to bring real-world city design principles into the digital sandbox of Minecraft. By drawing on university-level knowledge in urban planning, traffic management, socioeconomics, geography, and architecture, among other disciplines, the project combines these fields to create a fictional city. Wakyuta is thoughtfully modeled after communities found across the Great Plains, blending academic insights with creative simulation.

ABOUT THE CITY

The fictional city of Wakyuta, founded in 1855, is nestled in Monona County, a region in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. Sized roughly the same as nearby Omaha, it sits on the forested banks along the winding Missouri River. The region has long been home to multiple Native American tribes and First Nations people, primarily some within the Great Sioux Nation. The name “Wakyuta”, a derivative of “winding river”, has its origins in the Dakota language.
